North Sea Port builds new quay in Quarleshaven in Vlissingen

news-details

North Sea Port is building an 800 meter long new quay at Quarleshaven in Vlissingen-East. This enables the Bulk Terminal Zeeland company to expand its activities. The quay at Shipyard Reimerswaal will also be longer as a result.

The new quay at Bulk Terminal Zeeland in the Sloe area will replace the old quay that will be demolished. The combination of Werkendam hydraulic engineers Hakkers and De Klerk will start construction of the new quay at the end of March 2022. The new quay with a length of 800 meters will be ready by the end of 2024. This will make the quay on the south side of Quarleshaven a total of 1,200 meters long. North Sea Port is investing no less than 40 million euros in new port infrastructure here.

The transhipment company Bulk Terminal Zeeland sees its quay expanded from 250 meters to 440 meters. This creates more space for the transhipment of dry bulk such as wood pellets, gypsum, raw materials for the steel industry, organic agricultural products and bulk rocks for the reinforcement of wind turbines at sea.

The new quay also ensures that 10 hectares of extra land can be allocated to Bulk Terminal Zeeland. In addition, there is still sufficient space between the terminal and Reimerswaal Shipyard for a new company that wants to develop activities there.

Quay for different ship types and companies

Various types of seagoing vessels such as project cargo vessels, lifting vessels, bulk carriers, fruit ships and tankers with a draft of up to 12.5 meters as well as inland vessels will be able to moor at the new quay. The water depth can be increased by two meters later. The quay will be reinforced and made suitable for a quay load of 5 tons per square metre.

“Part of the quay will be opened up and made suitable for potential customers who want to settle on the Quarleskade,” says Daan Schalck, CEO of North Sea Port. “This way we are economical with our port infrastructure.” The new quay also connects to the terminal of Shipyard Reimerswaal, which will acquire an extra 40 meters with the new quay. As a result, the company that maintains and repairs ships will have a total of 425 meters of quay at its disposal.

Hein van Laar, commercial director Hakkers BV comments: “After previous successful performances in Vlissingen by Hakkers and De Klerk, we are very proud to realize this new project for North Sea Port. It shows our strength as a constructive hydraulic engineer who also has all the necessary disciplines in-house.”
